The big shots in venture capital once said that investing is an art. It can be sensed but cannot be explained in words. During my 12 years practicing in venture capital, especially in the past five years， I invested in 26 companies， including 7 IPO and 11 ready to go public. From the growth experience of many early stage enterprises to go through rapid developments and to realize IPO, and the failures that we have encountered in some of the early stage investment projects, I am deeply aware of the fact that entrepreneurial and investment activities all have experiences and patterns to follow. Angel investment is the first money in early days of startup. Your investing yourself or asking others to invest is called angel investment. More than 10 years ago, Amazon just went IPO, the US had a very well-known e-commerce company CommerceOne. I heard that Victor Tong and brother who were studying in the US had started a business. The new company was called PacificNet that did B2B e-commerce. After introduction by a friend, I shook hands with them, met a couple of times and invested USD 400,000. The risk was actually great. I didn’t understand the market, didn’t understand the team, didn’t read the business plan in detail, and didn’t do due diligence. The first was believing a friend’s introduction. The second was the intuition that they brothers were not bad people. In fact, these actions were the characteristics of angel investment: emotional greater than rational. Three months later, well-known businessman Oei Hong Leong in Southeast Asia invested $ 5 million in this business at 5-times the valuation. The company backdoor listed at NASDAQ after six months, and fortunately I reduced my stock holdings gradually and exited.

More than 10 years later, Mr. Tong has become a well-known angel investor in the technology sector. It turned out that Mr. Tong’s father began doing early startups and investing in many traditional industries and businesses as early as more than 30 years ago. No wonder Mr. Tong inherited the authentic so he was able to write such a professional and comprehensive “Angel Investment” book. Very much appreciate Mr. Tong’s spirit of selfless dedication. He is passing down everything including his family’s most important experience in entrepreneurship, investment and raising funds, and even for enterprises to go public. Regardless of whether you are doing a startup or want to start up, or an angel or a VC, you must add this book to your collection. Frequently, “learn and at due times repeat what one has learned, is this not after all delightful?”

Entrepreneurship, big as to create an industry, small as to create a small brand, small products, and small businesses are innovative. Innovation has greatest risk. Failure is inevitable. Success is accidental. But there is trace to follow. Two heads are better than one. In addition to the team, the most important thing for startup is money. There is no statement in startup, only predictions; no result, only bluffing. Banks will not lend you money. VCs are afraid to invest money in you. Only one kind of people who is not only well versed in business, but they also have been a voracious adventurer for entrepreneurship, they are angel investors.

Among all players in capital market including private equity guys and venture capitalists, “Angel investor” has been given the most beautiful name. This name conveys the idea that we, as angel investors, believe what we are told and trust entrepreneurs that we meet. In most cases, angel investors are Family, Friends and Fool. I can tell it is very true from my past experience. Besides, angel investors are often kind-hearted and idealistic so that they are willing to listen to entrepreneurs’ thoughts and sometimes believe in what they hear without too many reasons. But it doesn’t make angel investors fools and philanthropists. Successful angel investors often have solid industry background, entrepreneurial experience as well as capability to evaluate an entrepreneur correctly and effectively. In China, angel investing is becoming more mature and developing into a professional investment activity. The success of Y Combinator in U.S. and Charles Xue in China have proven the value of angel investors.

I do hope Victor's book can attract more successful individuals to become angel investors in order to move Chinese innovation onto a fast track.
