Samsung has unveiled a new smartphone – but unlike the Galaxy S9, you won’t be able to buy the device – ever. Whilst this new product has some desirable features (like a massive swappable battery), the PR team for the company has kept mum, so much so that we don’t even know the name of the device. The current ESN services, known as Airwave, will be phased out and replaced by “Public Safety-LTE” 4G which will allow for new features like live video broadcasting and quicker access to records and in

Joining Skagen’s line up of hybrid smartwatches alongside the Hald Hybrid Mini and Signatur T-Bar range, the Holst is one of the thinnest hybrid watches we’ve tried on and it’s remarkably light, too. The Skagen Holst comes in two variants. One has a chain metal strap and a black watch face, while the other has a dark blue face with a brown leather strap. We don’t have an exact release date for the Skagen Holst yet, but it’s set to join the company’s summer line up so it shouldn’t be too long to

Amazon is offering a pair of Essential HD earphones — a $99 value — for free when you purchase an Essential Phone this week. Sweetening the deal is the fact that Amazon has already discounted this Android 8 phone by $50 from $499.99 to $449.99, which is the lowest price currently available. Amazon offers the Essential Phone in three colors: Pure White, Black Moon, and Halo Gray, which is exclusive to Amazon and has a matte finish. And when you purchase the Halo Gray version, you’ll also get Amaz

It seems that buyers of laptops which run with Nvidia’s GeForce MX150 discrete graphics should be aware that there are reportedly two different versions of this GPU, one of which apparently offers considerably less on the performance front. However, the issue here is that Nvidia doesn’t make any distinction between these two flavors of the GeForce MX150 on its website or in marketing materials, so it isn’t letting would-be buyers know that they are potentially getting a slower spin on the GPU. T

If you’ve yet to see Epic Games’ amazing demo of ray tracing graphics technology using Star Wars: The Last Jedi characters, go ahead and watch below. Just know that, while these incredible visuals were rendered in real time, they cost at least $60,000 to make. Ray tracing is a hyper-realistic, dynamic lighting technology that has long existed in the realm of computer-generated film-making, where visuals are rendered once and then become a simple video file. For this tech to finally be on the hor

While Fortnite has launched in a limited invite-only form on iOS, PUBG has decided on a worldwide full release on both Android and iOS. Figure fightAt this moment, PUBG Mobile is the most downloaded game on the Apple App store and has moved ahead of Fortnite on the US downloads chart. With its less widespread release, Fortnite Mobile couldn’t hope to achieve download figures of this scale. It seems like a risky move but it’s clearly one that’s working: in the month of February, Fortnite managed

The first Wear OS watch is the incredibly titled Hublot Big Bang Referee 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia. This may be one of the most efficient ways to get the World Cup results first… but the watch doesn’t come cheap. There’s no big song and dance about this being the first ever Wear OS toting watch on Hublots stand. We already thought it was quite strange for Google to rebrand Wear OS without any new devices or sharing updates on how the new software will effect users, but this is just another we

Our test subjects are the Google Pixel 2 XL, Apple’s iPhone X and the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, and we’re focusing on the portrait modes across all three phones. The Galaxy S9 Plus picture is also brighter than the other two shots, further flattening the subject and flattering him in the process. Kicking off with the Galaxy S9 Plus at a distance, the beautification applied here actually looks good. Portrait Mode comparison verdictThere are a handful of conclusions we can draw from our portrait mod

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made his first public appearance since the revelations that research company Cambridge Analytica had harvested data from 50 million Facebook users without their permission. “This was a major breach of trust and I’m really sorry that this happened,” Zuckerberg told CNN, reiterating a statement published on his own Facebook page earlier in the day. “We are doing a set of things to restrict the amount of access that developers can get going forward, but the other [t

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 was announced in August 2017 and hit stores in September, but we might see the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 slightly earlier in the year, as Samsung is apparently already working on firmware for the phone. OK, that might not sound super exciting, but the timing of these tests is, as the company didn’t start testing firmware for the Galaxy Note 8 until early April. That’s only a couple of weeks difference, but as SamMobile notes, the company also started testing Samsung Galaxy

From today (March 22), Virgin’s fastest broadband deal gets a 16% speed boost, from a maximum of 300Mb to a scarcely believable 350Mb. The good news is that it’s possible to get very powerful image apps for free. You’re not going to get a direct analog of everything you’d find in Photoshop, but you might be surprised by how powerful the best free alternatives are. Inevitably some apps will have issues – for example one of our picks, a web-based editor, doesn’t work properly in Safari; others can be a little difficult to learn – but the benefits massively outweigh any downside. Another browser-based Photoshop alternative – this

Although the iPhone XI probably won’t be announced until September, Apple could begin trial production of it soon, in order to prevent delays. DigiTimes reports that trial production could begin in the second quarter of 2018 (so any time from April to June), citing ‘sources from Taiwan-based IC design houses’. That’s apparently in order to push ahead delivery schedules and ensure there’s a high enough yield rate of 3D sensor modules. The sources further suggest that mass production of the new iP

We’re less than a week away from the unveiling of the Huawei P20 on March 27, and leaks are flooding in, most recently in the form of photos of a dummy unit next to the Huawei Nova 3e – which is likely to launch as the Huawei P20 Lite outside China and Middle East. The phone is also seemingly smaller than the Nova 3e, which has a 5.84-inch screen, so if this dummy unit is accurate the Huawei P20 could have a smaller display than that. The Huawei P20 looks big, but might be smaller than the P20 L

The trial is all part of the UK Autodrive project, a government backed initiative which is spending millions to push autonomous vehicle technology. This service is powered by data from the parking sensors of vehicles using a car park. It’s thought that the system will also be able to incorporate data from a car parks’ own monitoring system. Driverless vehicles: 1. Although this simplifies what is a complicated and contentious subject, it shows the driverless car debate is one that will run and r

While Fujifilm, Sony and Canon are growing their mirrorless lens ranges, one area that’s perhaps been overlooked is the fast ultra-wide-angle prime lens. Venus Optics thinks it’s spotted a gap in the market, and has produced the world’s widest rectilinear f/2.8 lens for mirrorless APS-C cameras in the shape of the new manual-focus-only Laowa 9mm f/2.8 Zero-D. It’s the third lens in Laowa’s ‘Zero-D’ lineup, joining the 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D and 15mm f/2.8 Zero-D, with Venus Optics claiming the lens o

Following its crackdown on intrusive ads, the next version of Google Chrome is taking another step towards making the internet less annoying by no longer letting videos with sound play automatically. The overall goal is to reduce unpleasant surprises when sound starts blaring out unexpectedly. Chrome 66 (now available in beta for desktop and mobile) will only let videos play if they don’t have sound, if the sound is muted, or if you’ve previously clicked on the site during your current browsing

It’s fair to say that Atari caused quite a stir last year when it announced its first console in over 20 years, the Atari VCS – or, as it was known back then, simply the Ataribox. The Atari VCS will seek to alleviate those,” Arzt says. As far as rock-solid, definite components of the Atari VCS go, that’s all we’ve got for now. In the perfect world, when Atari VCS launches, the company would like it to be a multimedia machine that seamlessly integrates into your living room. The answer to what th
