As promised, you can now unlock the OnePlus 5 with your face, as long as you’re prepared to install the beta version of OxygenOS. Without any 3D scanning hardware to make use of, the Face Unlock system pushed out here isn’t as secure as the Face ID that Apple built into the iPhone X, and it won’t work in the dark. Beta bewareThe latest beta update for OnePlus device owners also includes a variety of security patches and bug fixes, as usual. If you do decide you want to take the plunge and start

Many VPN location issues are simpler to address, though, so don’t give up just yet. It’s also worth bearing in mind the good reasons why a VPN isn’t enoughVerify your VPN locationThe first step in diagnosing VPN location issues is to confirm what your client software is telling you. Sometimes a VPN client will say it has allocated an IP address from one country, but actually use somewhere else entirely. To check this for yourself, point your browser at IP Location immediately after you’ve had an

Remember Fuchsia OS? It’s the mysterious operating system about which we know very little, except that Google is actively developing it and has described it as an “experimental project” that isn’t replacing Chrome OS or Android… at least for the time being. Well, we just learned a something new about it – it’s being tested on the Google Pixelbook, the standard bearer for Google’s Chromebooks. That means it doesn’t have to deal with older, legacy devices and software code in the same way that A

A fresh Red Dead Redemption 2 release date of June 8, 2018 has been leaked by a Dutch retailer, making it later than Rockstar’s teased “Spring 2018” arrival. While this doesn’t bode particularly well for this leak, it’s the retailer itself – Dutch-based Coolshop – which is of interest as it’s the same place that correctly leaked the official launch date for Grand Theft Auto V.Spring no more? The listing no longer has the June 8 date on it, with Coolshop changing the expected release date to say

The best providers have OpenVPN setup tutorials which not only mention configuration files, but also show you how to use them. Search the Support pages for references to OpenVPN or OVPN files. If you’ve created an account with a VPN provider, log in and browse the pages for OpenVPN setup files. When you’re happy that everything is running smoothly, right click the OpenVPN icon again, select the checked server and click Disconnect. The remote line tells OpenVPN the name of the VPN server and the

We know, no judgement – we also have that problem. There’s so much good stuff available right now, but there are also a lot of great games still to come and it just won’t do to let them pass you by. To help you know which titles you should be keeping a weather eye on over the next year, we’ve put together this useful guide. Whether you’re playing on PC, PS4, Xbox One or Nintendo Switch, you’ll find something in this list. Not every one of these games has a pinned down release date just yet, but

Following the reveal that Apple has been slowing down older iPhones as their batteries aged, Tim Cook’s company has now announced that it will be immediately offering discount replacement battery packs for those affected. Originally, Apple had believed that the discounted batteries would not be available until late January. But as the severity of the situation has risen, Apple appears to have been able to speed up the process. The batteries would normally cost $79 when not under warranty, but ar

There is one area where newer hardware lags behind older gear: latency. A 2014 MacBook Pro was lagging behind on 100ms, while a Windows machine running an Intel i7 processor took 200ms. All about the complexitySo why do older computers register key presses faster than newer ones, on the whole? “In practice, the solution to poor performance caused by ‘excess’ complexity is often to add more complexity,” writes Luu. However, Luu does say we’re now emerging from the latency “dark ages”, with modern

Apple refreshed both the 12-inch MacBook and MacBook Pro this year, and we certainly loved the former, which boasted a considerably improved keyboard (a much-needed move). And it’s expensive – in fact, at $1,299 (£1,249, AU$1,899), it now starts at the same price as the MacBook Pro (non-Touch Bar). Particularly for the MacBook Pro variants with the fancy new Touch Bar, which start at a rather eye-watering $1,799 (£1,749, AU$2,699) for the base model. Is it any wonder with these sort of profit ma

With the Intel Core i9 X-series, that’s howHardcore core countsThe pressure was on for Intel to respond, and in May at Computex 2017 it did just that by announcing its Intel Core X series of processors, which included the world’s first consumer desktop processor with 18 cores and 36 threads – the Intel Core i9-7980XE. Intel has long had a reputation for releasing CPUs that are a fair amount more expensive than AMD, and in 2017 Intel didn’t challenge this perception – it reinforced it. The top-of

Chances are, Nautilus is Samsung’s upcoming Chromebook. That means you’ll be able to doodle on the touchscreen screen and give your fingers a rest, as on the Samsung Chromebook Pro, which also came with a stylus. Whatever the new Samsung Chromebook ends up being called, it’ll almost certainly be able to run a selection of Android apps. All of this means Android tablets aren’t really needed any more – as Google itself has acknowledged by finally pulling the Pixel C tablet from its online store af

After falling behind its rivals in terms of speed and market share, Mozilla launched itself back into the game in 2017 with Firefox Quantum – the browser’s biggest update since its first release in 2004. “We fell behind for five years, so it feels good to come out swinging,” Mark Mayo, vice president of Firefox, told TechRadar just before the launch of Quantum in November. Focus on privacyAlong with speed, privacy was one of Mozilla’s biggest focal points for 2017. The Glass Room pop-up art inst

LG has long experimented with flexible displays, with years of research starting to bear fruit in the company’s super-light, super-bendy (and super-expensive) OLED TV displays. It now looks as though the company may be ready to begin trickling that tech down into some interesting portable devices. A 2016 patent, uncovered by LetsGoDigital describes a device with a flexible, extendable display. But, as the smartphone market has matured, and flexible screen technologies improved, the potential for

Check out our list of best VPN service providers1. Browse anonymouslyWhen you connect to a secure VPN, you’re able to browse the web with complete anonymity. That’s because a good VPN service will hide your actual location, letting you browse without ever leaving a ‘physical’ trace. If that sounds spooky to you, then using a VPN is a great way to keep your digital life private. After that, try switching your VPN location to a few different countries and check the same prices.

The Nintendo Switch, this Christmas’s most sought-after present, has been hacked, paving the way for installations of unofficial “homebrew” software – and potentially even pirated games. While the video explaining the specifics of the hack has now been removed, should you be interested in exploring the hack in the future it appears that you’ll need to make sure your console stays at Switch firmware version 3.0. That means keeping your console offline to avoid newer system updates, and picking up
