Ask anyone in the UK about their broadband and you’re unlikely to get a particularly effusive response. Every year Ofcom releases reports about unsatisfactory broadband speeds and for the past 10 years the UK government has been taking steps to establish a basic and ubiquitous level of service across the country. In the 2017 Digital Economy Act, the government stated it wanted to develop a Universal Service Obligation which would allow every UK resident to be able to demand at least a 10Mbps fro

If you’ve not been following the saga of Chrome and the Windows Store, this needs a bit of explanation. So Google’s bright idea was to publish a simple installer for Chrome on the store, which allowed for the download and installation of the browser. Whereupon, as The Verge reports, the app was yanked down and a Microsoft spokesperson commented: “We have removed the Google Chrome Installer App from Microsoft Store, as it violates our Microsoft Store policies.”Fighting the fakesWhy does Google ca

The European court of justice has ruled that ride-hailing service Uber is a transportation company. While this may sound fairly obvious to anyone who’s ever used the service, Uber has up until this point been operating as a computer services business that connects users with drivers. An EU directive limits the restrictions that can be placed on digital services, and it expressly excludes transportation services. Uber getting reclassified is likely to mean greater regulation on how it’s allowed t

The image, spotted on Weibo and shared by 91mobiles, shows a screen with almost no bezel at the left or right edges. Although hard to be certain, it looks like it also has an 18:9 aspect ratio like many other recent flagships. Other than the screen though the most interesting aspect of this leak is the dual front-facing cameras. If previous leaks are to be believed then these might also be joined by dual rear cameras. But we should know the truth soon, as it’s rumored that the Nokia 9 will be an

Over the years TVs have gone from massive hulking beasts to OLED displays that are as thin as a coin. But speakers haven’t gone through quite the same transition, leading to soundbars that dwarf the size of the TV they’re attached to. That’s something that Samsung wants to fix with its upcoming NW7000 Sound+ soundbar, a 53.5mm-deep speaker that comes close to matching the thinness of modern televisions. Big sound in a thin packageThe soundbar comes packing three channels of sound and a built-in

The well-received Nokia 8 has done a pretty commendable job of being HMD Global’s placeholder flagship phone in 2017. In terms of its chipset, the Nokia 9 will use the same Snapdragon 835 processor featured in its Nokia 8. It can also be found in several other big 2017 phones, including Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8, S8 and S8 Plus, Google’s Pixel 2 range and the LG V30. While we still don’t know everything about the phone (how much RAM will it have? ), we shouldn’t have to wait too much longer to fin

These include video-based ads that automatically start blaring audio, ads that hog the entire screen and ads that don’t let you see the content without enduring a countdown. That means users are effectively getting the content for free, as no revenue goes back to the site for the visit. There should always be something showing, although only the “good” ads will remain. Given enough time, that possibly means obnoxious ads in general will become rare, as ad makers will realize their content isn’t

That, at least, is the worst-case scenario for Facebook’s latest feature , which automatically notifies you if anyone uploads a photo that looks like you’re in it. In line with ongoing advancements in facial recognition technology, Facebook will do this even if you’re not tagged. In Facebook’s words, it’s “powered by the same technology we’ve used to suggest friends you may want to tag in photos or videos.” Caught in the actBut Facebook doesn’t shy from explaining that this service could also be

For better or for worse, Facebook is everywhere these days, but the same can’t be said of its Facebook Spaces virtual reality social platform. The service has been an exclusive for Facebook’s own Oculus Rift VR headset in its eight-month lifespan so far, but today Facebook announced that it’s letting Spaces go cross-platform. Don’t expect to be able to hop onto your PlayStation VR and try it out, however. For now, cross-platform support is limited to the HTC Vive , the Oculus Rift’s only true co

The GPD Win 2 is being fired up as a campaign on Indiegogo, and the new model features some considerable upgrades over the original. The original GPD Win can be picked up for as cheap as $300 (or £230, AU$405) these days, at least if you import from a Chinese online retailer. The other bone of contention is managing expectations around such a portable gaming device, and the sort of performance oomph it’s capable of mustering. And, there are already lists of some quite nifty games which run well

Just as is the case with Apple’s Mac operating system, seemingly minor numerical increases in version numbers actually denote major changes and improvements, and Final Cut Pro X (FCPX) 10.4 certainly delivers on this front. Color us excitedHowever, we’re more excited about all the new color correction tools at our disposal in this fresh incarnation of Apple’s video editing software. Hot on the heels of a photo seemingly showing the Samsung Galaxy S9’s backplate, we’re now seeing purported renders of cases for both the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, and they claim the phones might differ in more ways than just screen size. The cases for the S9 Plus offer an interesting discussion point, because we’ve not seen as much of that phone, but they echo what we’ve heard before – namely that Samsung’s larger handset will have a dual-lens camera on the back, while the s

You edit this using any of the brushes, painting areas dark to hide the contents of the layer. Still, this suits the app’s painterly approach, which is enhanced by a new set of wet painting brushes. An iPad Pro with Apple’s Pencil is the ideal setup: both pressure and tilt are supported, and you get detailed control over how brushes (which include pencils, pens, and airbrushes) respond. On a first-generation iPad Pro, Procreate’s new 64-bit graphics engine, using iOS’ Metal API, ensures it almos
